Hey there! Can we talk about something that’s been on my mind lately? It’s this idea of finding your community – you know, that group of people where you just feel like you belong. I’ve been thinking about my own journey, and I thought I’d share it with you. Maybe you’ll see a bit of yourself in my story, or maybe it’ll inspire you to keep looking for your own community.

You know, I’ve always been a bit of a community seeker. Even as a kid, I was all about creating these little groups. I remember having this “best friends club” where we’d put on holiday shows for our families, choreograph dances, and even clean out basements to host our parties. Looking back, I guess I was always trying to create that sense of belonging.

As I got older, that desire to connect and contribute just grew stronger. In high school, I found myself volunteering at the school library, watering plants, and organizing books. It wasn’t glamorous, but it made me feel like I was part of something, you know?

Then came college, and wow, did things change! I joined the television club as an on-campus reporter and even became a DJ at the radio station. But here’s the thing – I was one of the few Latina students on campus, and I still felt like something was missing. That’s when I decided to join a Latina Sorority, and let me tell you, it was like finding a piece of myself I didn’t even know was missing.

Being part of that sorority was amazing. We organized cultural events, did tons of community service, and I even ended up as President for a year. It felt like I’d finally found my place. But you know how life goes – things change. I got married, had kids, and suddenly those sorority gatherings became fewer and farther between.

Motherhood brought its own kind of loneliness, and I found myself searching again. So, I did what any millennial mom would do – I started a blog and created Latina Mom Meetups. It was great at first, but let’s be real, being a mom is tough, and sometimes it’s hard to prioritize meetups when you’re juggling work and kids. Despite the challenges, I’m grateful for this experience because it led me to form deep, lasting friendships. Some of the women I met through these meetups, especially the co-founders, have become my closest friends. We still meet regularly, supporting each other through the ups and downs of motherhood and life. These relationships have become an invaluable part of my journey, providing a sense of community and understanding that I cherish deeply.

Just when I thought I’d given up on finding my mom community, life threw me a curveball. I became a dance mom. And not just a weekend dance mom, but a full-on, we’re-at-the-studio-all-the-time kind of dance mom. Suddenly, I found myself surrounded by this incredible group of parents, all of us cheering on our kids and supporting each other through the ups and downs of competitive dance.

It’s funny, isn’t it? I spent so much time looking for my community, and it found me when I least expected it. I guess what I’m trying to say is, don’t give up if you haven’t found your people yet. Keep putting yourself out there, keep trying new things. Your community might be waiting for you in the most unexpected place.

Speaking of creating friendships and being part of a community, let me share some casual tips I’ve picked up along the way:

  • Be selfless and a good listener. It’s like having the comfiest pair of shoes for your friend’s journey – they’ll want to keep walking with you!
  • Stay authentic. Just be you, quirks and all. It’s way easier than trying to be someone you’re not, and people appreciate real connections.
  • Help out without expecting anything back. It’s like planting seeds of kindness – you never know when they’ll bloom, but when they do? Magic!
  • Ditch the jealousy. Instead, celebrate your friends’ wins like they’re your own. It feels so much better!
  • Respect is key. Treat your pals like the awesome humans they are. And when life throws curveballs? Be a problem solver together.
  • For all you parents out there, supporting each other with the kiddos is gold. Swapping babysitting duties or sharing parenting hacks? That’s friendship gold right there.
  • Think before you speak. Words can be like boomerangs – they come back around, so make sure they’re good ones!
  • Embrace different perspectives. It’s like adding new flavors to your friendship recipe. Mix it up and see what delicious connections you can cook up!
  • Respect your boundaries. Being part of a community is great, but it’s equally important to know your limits and communicate them. It’s okay to say no sometimes!

Remember, building solid friendships is kind of like tending a garden. It takes time, effort, and a whole lot of care. But oh boy, when those friendship flowers bloom? It’s the most beautiful sight in the world.

And hey, if you’re feeling alone, remember that connection can exist anywhere – even in this digital space. Shoot me an email, leave a comment. Let’s connect. Because at the end of the day, we’re all in this together, and no one should have to go through life, especially motherhood, feeling alone. I’d love to hear your story!
